Portal Second Age

Portal Second Age, released in June 1998, continued Magic: The Gathering’s beginner-focused approach with a slightly expanded ruleset. Like the original Portal, it used simplified card frames and avoided complex mechanics, but introduced more creature types and spell effects to ease players into standard Magic gameplay. The set featured straightforward cards and basic strategies, ideal for teaching. While not tournament-legal at the time, several cards—like Rolling Thunder and Armageddon—gained Legacy and Commander legality later. Portal Second Age is remembered for its clean design, pirate-themed flavor, and value as an introductory product.
